Village Day 2018 planning

Discussions have now produced an agreed plan for this year’s Thakeham Village Day to be on Saturday 15 September (involving the Primary School, Pre-School and other community groups).  There will also be a separate fireworks event around Halloween/Bonfire night, to be led by Steyning Grammar School (Rock Road), supported by the Parish Council. The Abingworth football field is currently expected to be as the venue for both events.  If you can spare some time to get involved in organising these events, please contact Caroline Instance (01403 741369/caroline.instance@bitinternet.com). The next event planning meeting is scheduled for the evening of 7 March (venue TBC).

Other dates for your diaries

The annual Village Tidy event will take place on the morning of Saturday 7 April – further details of timing and meeting-points will be circulated in March.

The annual May Day Walk (featuring bluebells as usual) will be on Monday 7th May.

Traffic calming

We are extremely frustrated that installation of the vehicle activated signs in the Abingworth 30mph zone has been set back yet again by the contractor going out of business the week before installation was due in early February. Oakford Homes are urgently seeking a replacement contractor to take forward this work. The latest on the pinch-point scheme is that the consultants say that they are on track with translating the consulted design into a detailed agreement with WSCC Highways; we will keep pressure up for the work to start as soon as possible.  Monaghans Mushrooms have also agreed to re-start steps (including a planning application) to re-shape the front of their site, with features to prevent HGVs turning north up the B2139.

Thakeham Oak signs

The eagle-eyed will have noticed that the northern Thakeham Oak sign is no longer at the Harbolets/Goose Green crossroads of the B2139: the explanation is that it unexpectedly fell down due to rotting of the post. The Parish Council will be considering how, when and where to re-erect it. Its pair, located south of Jackets Hill, has been checked and steps are in hand to ensure its safety.

Velo South event – Sunday 23rd September

HDC have just announced this major new cycle event; they expect 15,000 riders to participate in this 100-mile route around West Sussex, starting and ending at Goodwood.  While there are lots of positive aspects to this, just to flag the practicalities – it will involve closed roads and the route (see full route here)  will cross Thakeham parish via the B2133 from Adversane to the Harbolets crossroad, over the B2139 and along Goose Green Lane to Ashington.  Further information regarding the road closure arrangements will be circulated nearer the time.  The Storrington area could see issues as the day in question is also the second day of the Parham House Autumn Fair.
